Piano lessons for the curious learner.

Hi, I’m Sarah.

I’m an artist at heart with a love for adventure and beauty in every area of my life. Music wasn’t a serious study for me until later in my childhood, but once I began lessons it quickly became my favorite way to spend days at home. I started a teaching practice in my hometown of Dayton, Ohio as a teen, graduated with my B.A. in Music at age 19, and moved to NYC in 2021. I now have 18 years of teaching experience across hundreds of students, and reside here in Brooklyn Heights, New York.

I’m classically trained and focus on both classical and contemporary music in my students’ repertoire. Every student is encouraged to set their own goals, and together we'll work to meet every last one. Students will learn how to play the piano using music and hands-on activities/exercises personalized to their needs, receiving customized assignments to complete throughout the week in order to grow their skills.

I strive to create safe, personalized learning environments where students can be themselves and understand music in a way that makes sense to them. Students are always encouraged, never pressured. My comprehensive teaching style builds strong foundations in note-reading, music theory, and technical skills, while always leaving space for expressive musicality--the very thing that keeps us coming back to music for more.

Ethos + Methodology

I believe in strong foundations.

Music exists because emotion exists. The greatest of musicians are known by their ability to connect to, refine, and uniquely express the intricacies of the music that they play.

In order to fully understand these intricacies, we must explore the structure behind it all. Foundational musical concepts such as rhythm, music theory, technique, and strong note reading skills are taught at every one of my lessons. These elements become the foundation on which each student’s distinctive expression is built, no matter how long they have been studying for.

I believe in creating safe spaces.

Every student deserves to learn in a space that is safe for them. In a space where they are cared for, seen, and understood. Gone are the days of feeling pressure and disappointment from your piano teacher for not practicing or struggling to play the music. It is my promise to every student that I will guide them through each concept with patience and understanding, encouraging them to be their best but never making them feel like they’ve fallen short. Lessons are a safe space for every student regardless of gender, race, religion, or ability, and I will always welcome feedback if you feel I have not upheld this promise.

I believe in individualized instruction.

After 17 years of teaching and hundreds of students passing through my doors, I’ve experienced firsthand how every person learns in their own way.

Every student deserves to leave their lesson fully understanding the music in front of them, and as their teacher, I believe it is my responsibility to take the necessary time to get to know them in order to make this possible. If a student doesn’t immediately click with a new piece of information, it’s an opportunity for me to reconstruct the idea in a different way. One that empowers them to grow into the musician that they have the ability to be. Every lesson is unique to the student in front of me.
